This past weekend I started up my main campaign. It’s one that I’ve been planning and writing for quite a while. This time around we started with a core of three players, but that number will fluctuate from week to week. One of the greatest obstacles in running a game is getting everyone’s schedules to line up. But we got a good core of players to start this time. So how well did our adventuring party of a kenku rogue, half-elf sorcerer, and dragonborn cleric fare? Let me tell you the tale of their first venture.
Our game begins with our adventurers entering the town of Larael, each for their own reasons as they do not know each other yet. The town of Larael is an oddity; it’s a small town away from any major trade routes, though that’s not what makes it interesting. The odd thing about Larael is that it is an impossibly peaceful town. Nothing bad ever seems to happen to the town. Heavy storms turn into drizzles by the time they reach the town, bandits that seek to pillage the town disappear without trace by morning, and even life threatening illnesses seem to fade away with a good night’s sleep. It is this oddity that has attracted those who hear of it.
Our first adventurer to make it to town is Nyxia, the half-elf sorcerer. She sought the town due to her heritage. Half-elves in this world are extremely rare. Half breeds barely happen due to the cultures not really appropriating relationships. On top of that you have bioligies that are very conflicting, making birth nearly impossible. Nevertheless Nyxia exists beyond all improbability. But the rarity of her existence had her a bit worried that she’d draw attention. So here she lives in Larael where the peace of the town gives her peace of mind.
The next adventurer to make it to town is Durzo, the kenku rogue. He is a mercenary who’s been sent to Larael to hunt down the source of this protective magic and take it for his employer. Should he be unable to do so, he was instructed to get rid of the source to open up the town for pillaging. He entered the outskirts of town, climbing on the rooftops to get a view of the town. From there he noticed the townsfolk moving with haste and purpose.
Our last adventurer (for now) is Jael, the dragonborn cleric. She seeks to break the stereotypes of her race that exist. Due to them starting as creations of the dragon lords, they are assumed to be just as greedy and violent as them. Jael seeks to make herself an example of the opposite. In her pilgrimage to the Pacimorsae Grove, she stopped by this small town to investigate the peaceful magic, possibly hoping to harness it to help others outside its sphere of influence.
Our story starts with Nyxia entering a bookstore. In there she searched for answers about half-elves. She was able to find one musty tome that chronicled the meeting of humans and elves, and a brief history of their interactions. Not much, but it was a start. During that time, Jael visited the local infirmary to see if the protective magic saved citizens from diseases. She talked with the medic there to find that the infirmary was rarely filled, due to illness fading away overnight. During this time Durzo heard a commotion coming from just outside town, near a lake.
Durzo investigated the commotion to find a flumph (a giant telepathic floating jellyfish) fighting a small human girl, looking to eat her. Durzo realized that he needed help to save the child, so he ran back to town, yelling for anyone to help. Jael was the first to answer this call, followed shortly by Nyxia who had just pieced together that this girl may be the one that a woman was crying over just earlier. Now haphazardly banded together, our party set off on their first encounter.
The fight wasn’t too difficult for our party, though it did run a tad long due to some really botched rolls. There were more misses than hits on both sides. Nevertheless they killed the flumph and healed the girl who had been engulfed in the monster’s acidic body. They then brought her back to her parents. Overjoyed beyond compare, they offered to let the group spend the night and have dinner with them. The party agreed, and enjoyed a well deserved rest. In the morning they went to their own business, but not before the father asked Jael for her help. He is now looking for the source of protective magic so that he can ensure his family’s safety, and he informed Jael (with Durzo listening) that he knows where the magic originates from. And it was there that we wrapped up for the night.
Where will our adventurers go from here? Will their conflicting natures drive them apart, or will they come together despite them? What is this source of protective magic? We’ll just have to wait and see, and hope that our players keep those dice rolling high!
