Your race is the heart of your character. It is who they are at their core. Their thoughts, feelings, and upbringing are influenced by their race. This week we’ll be taking a look into the races of D&D and how they shape your character. Today we’ll be talking about Tritons.
Tritons are the protectors of the sea. They originate from the elemental plane of water, where they hunted down the monsters of the deep seas. They hunted these monsters so well that they had to flee to the material plane. So of course the tritons followed. Now they have settlements along the ocean floor where they live, occasionally leaving to battle the threat of a denizen of the deep.
Triton civilizations are far away from other inhabitants of the world. This disconnect, mixed with a sense of guardianship over the land they protect, can make the tritons appear to be arrogant. They expect other creatures to show them respect as they are saviors of the world in their eyes. They however do not realize that most creatures don’t even know of the deeds of the triton, which can lead to some tension. Once this tension is eased though, you can find a faithful companion in them.
Tritons have given up their home to protect those around them. They will readily jump at the chance to protect any that they consider a friend. They may have trouble finding friends, since the surface world is so foreign to them. The physical part of not being able to move all around like they would in water catches them off guard from time to time. Their highly regimed and proper society is different than many cultures, and the tritons may find this casualness confusing. his can lead to many interesting and funny moments as the triton learns about the world around them.
Tritons can make for very fun characters, as they have this fish out of water feeling to them. If you enjoyed the first Thor movie, you might be able to make a Thor like personality to emulate this idea. Either way you can create a very fun and cool hero that commands the seas themselves. What character will you create? Will it be a triton, or one of the other races that we’ve covered? Let me know in the comments below. Until then, keep those dice rolling high!
