Your race is the heart of your character. It is who they are at their core. Their thoughts, feelings, and upbringing are influenced by their race. This week we’ll be taking a look into the races of D&D and how they shape your character. Today we’ll be talking about elves.
Elves have been in the game since its inception. They’re a mysterious race, often keeping themselves separate from other races to be among their own people. They’re one of the most long lived races, living for thousands of years. This gives them a different perspective of the world. They see events from a broader point of view. This means they come across as aloof, not caring particularly about events that affect the world on what is a smaller scale. For them, centuries are only like years to them. This is one of the biggest effects this race has on your roleplaying.
Elves come in three varieties: high elves, wood elves, and dark elves. High elves are the Tolkien style elves. They are the ones at the head of the Feywild councils. They’re the longsword wielding, graceful, royal elves. Wood elves are a bit more down to earth. They are one with the forest, and are often the first defenders to come to the aid of the wildlife. The third subrace is the dark elf. These are the twisted reflections of the elves. They live underground, plotting against each other and anyone else who crosses their paths. They are vile and despicable, unless they’re named Drizzt.
Elves are intelligent and dexterious. They are often spellcasters, but when they take up arms they prefer longswords and bows. These are only suggestions though. The beauty of this game is that you can create a character that defies the standards of the book. What will you create? Will it be an elf, or one of the other races that we’ll cover this week? Let me know in the comments below. Until then, keep those dice rolling high!
